Reading Tales & Wagging Tails

My dog Jamie and I became a dog therapy team in 2013. We volunteered at libraries for kids to read to a therapy dog and I have experienced many times the magic of reading to a dog.

Dogs are not judgmental, give no pressure, and they create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Therapy dogs are patient reading companions listening attentively to every word. (Although Jamie had on occasion fallen asleep.) The child would comment, and I would assure the child that Jamie wasn’t sleeping, but closed her eyes so she could hear the words better and imagine.

I’m getting a little off track, but I love talking about how Jamie has helped children improve their reading skills, faced fears, and calm neurodiverse children.
If your child is starting to learn how to read or needs a boost with their reading skills, I highly recommend asking your library if they have a 'reading-to-a-therapy animal program'.

If there isn't a reading program availalbe in your area turn your 'furry, reptilian, hoofed, or feathered’ pet into a reading buddy. But remember, your pet is the vehicle, and you are just along for the ride.

Reading to a therapy animal, even your pet, helps kids build confidence, improve fluency, and foster a love of books.
Plus, it’s a whole lot of tail-wagging fun!
Write in the comments if you use your pet as a reading buddy.
