Tails of Literacy: Unleashing the Power of Reading

Updated: Jan 5

Hello Friends, welcome New Subscribers, and Happy New Year to All!

It’s been some time since my last Blueberry Bear Tales eNewsletter.

I am not much for making goals, but this year I decided I needed to change things up a bit.

I have designed a new website which gave me the motivation to bring back my eNewsletter. www.blueberrybeartales.com.

It will be a six-issue eNewsletter for Educators and Parents. The content will be about children’s literacy along with lesson plans and activities. In between issues, I may pop into your inbox, with special announcements like freebies, book process updates, maybe a raffle or two, and I may even throw in some dog news. www.blueberrybeartales.com.

So, to better organize myself, I bought this new planner. Get this, it has a “How It Works” booklet. This planner includes Awareness & Self Discovery entries, Daily Rituals/Inspiration, Goals and Vision Board sections.

Have you made your goals yet?

What have I been up to? Plenty.

Three years ago, I started an author’s organization, Loving Literacy Authors (LLA). Local authors who are dedicated to helping improve the reading and writing skills of Arizona children. Getting LLA off the floor has been a challenge, but also rewarding.

Loving Literacy Authors is Community Partners with:

Children’s Museum of Phoenix the Art Museum of Phoenix Amanda Hope the Humane Society of Arizona For more information about LLA, check us out at: www.LovingLiteracyAuthors.com.

Since last June, a lot of my time has been caring for my 97-year-old father. I am so blessed to still have my dad.

Chjildren's book author Eileen Pieczonka and her father toasting to the New Year.
Eileen Pieczonka and her Father toasting to the New Year.

He loves the Argentine Tango dance and back in his 80s we took Tango dance lessons. For his Christmas gift I bought fourth row tickets to a Tango performance at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. I am soooooo looking forward to this evening with my father.

Between my father and LLA, I’ve basically neglected Blueberry Bear Tales.

But I have good news! I am working on a new story, and I am excited to take you along on this journey. I can’t give details just yet, but it is a story about a Dragon. My dear friend Rita Goldner will be illustrating it, and my goal is to have it out this year.

I’ve also started on my next Blueberry Bear book, which has been long overdue.

I have a few more items in the fire:

Author visit with therapy dog Kong.

I have school visit bookings for the new year. Bringing one of my therapy dogs is always a dog-gone smash hit with the students. Educators, if you are planning to have author visits or thinking of something different for Read Across America week, contact me soon before my planner is booked up.

I’m thinking about adding a kids’ section to my new website and I will keep you posted on that.

I am interested in learning how to create videos with a new video making software.

Drop me a line about what's new with you.

Oh and before I go, I would like to update you about my pup-dogs, Suki and Kong. They just turned 7 years old this past New Years Eve. More like seven going on two. Their puppyhood still hasn’t out-grown them. From not being prepared to raise two sibling puppies plus the environment that they were born in, they turned out to be pretty darn good dogs.

Suki and Kong have been therapy dogs for five years. As a dog therapy team, we volunteer for: the Chandler Police Department, Pawsitive Friendships, and sometimes hospice.

In a way, volunteering is also therapeutic for me. I love sharing my pup-dogs with others, and knowing they are making a difference is very gratifying.

Until the next email, I will leave you with this thought. I decided instead of reflecting back on what I could have or should have done; my new motto for this year is: LOVE the Person who I am TODAY.

I wish you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Let’s talk soon.
